This chapter starts by presenting the FRIEND programme to older adults as a frame of what facilitators will implement in structure. It follows by exploring the essential role and profile of the FRIEND Facilitator within the FRIEND Programme. Whether a professional or a volunteer, the facilitator plays a key part in fostering friendship as a tool to reduce loneliness and social exclusion in later life. Drawing on insights from focus groups across five countries, the chapter outlines the core skills and responsibilities expected of facilitators, as well as practical guidance on recruitment, group facilitation, and handling sensitive situations. Emphasis is placed on empathy, inclusivity, and creating a safe and welcoming space for older adults. Through structured training and careful preparation, facilitators are empowered to guide meaningful group sessions and support participants in building lasting social connections.
