The FRIEND blended learning programme is organised in 7 sessions. The ideal scenario for implementation was developed based on the inputs from the iterative focus groups run during the research and development phase: groups of 8 to 12 older adults, delivered by 2 facilitators, over a frequency of 1 session per week (Figure 1).
Figure 1. Scenario for implementation of the FRIEND programme
Each meeting will last two hours, of which one and a half hours will be devoted to the course and half an hour to a recreational moment such as a snack to be eaten together.
Each session is organised with a similar structure:
By providing a similar structure, the FRIEND Programme promotes stability and confidence in knowing what will happen next, which may generate greater engagement of older adults.
Each of the sessions of the FRIEND learning programme has a specific topic to focus on and the programme provides ‘tips for home’ for participants to explore further that topic. The main attention of the 7 sessions is to encourage and stimulate experimental and interactive activities. The ‘Tips for Home’ consist of in-depth materials on the topic of each session and an exercise to be carried out between meetings to try out the skills discussed during the meeting in everyday life or to stimulate reflection in preparation for the topic to be addressed in the next session. The tips for home are available online on the FRIEND project platform or via mail/WhatsApp or can be printed out. Later in Module 4, there will be in-depth explanation of each of the 7 sessions, including the topic and the related session plan.
